Introduction to 718 Mould Steel

Introduction to 718 Mould Steel

June 11, 2021

718 mold steel is currently the most widely used typical steel grade for general-purpose plastic mold steel. It is often referred to as "advanced plastic mold steel, and the newly developed new steel grades often use it as a typical comparison.

718 mold steel has better harden ability and superior performance, so it can produce large-sized and high-grade plastic mold forming parts.

Characteristics

Used for large-scale long-life plastic injection molds, such as molds for home appliances, computer casings, etc. Blow molds for plastic products with high surface finish can be used as slider forming tools in plastic molds due to their high hardness; mold parts that can be flame hardened or nitrided depending on production needs.

Typical Application examples

  1. Pattern plates for large molds, household appliances with high surface requirements.
  2. Suitable for large mirror plastic molds, such as automobiles, home appliances, audio and video products, etc.
  3. It can be used for plastic molds with mirror polishing requirements, and is suitable for injection molds and blow molds of PA, POM, PS, PE, PP, ABS plastics.
  4. Highly polished and demanding mold cavity.

Hardened Treatment

  • In order to increase the mold life to more than 800,000 mold times, the hardening method of quenching and low temperature tempering can be implemented on the pre-hardened steel.
  • When quenching, preheat it at 500-600℃ for 2-4 hours, then keep it at 850-880℃ for a certain period of time (at least 2 hours), put it in oil and cool to 50-100℃ and air cooling, the hardness can reach 50 after quenching -52HRC, in order to prevent cracking, 200℃ low temperature tempering treatment should be carried out immediately, after tempering, the hardness can be maintained above 48HRC

Nitriding Treatment

Nitriding treatment can obtain high-hardness surface layer structure. The surface layer hardness after nitriding can reach 650-700HV (57-60HRC). The mold life can reach more than 1 million times. The nitriding layer has the characteristics of dense structure, smoothness, and mold release. The corrosion resistance of humid air and lye is improved.

Shunhao melamine compression moulds

In the article “What Steel is Used for Melamine Moulds?",we know that 718 mold steel can be used to make melamine compression molds.

It is the most popular type of steel used in melamine tableware factories.

The tableware mold made of 718# steel is bright and shiny, and the melamine products produced are of high quality and competitiveness.

Shunhao Mould Factory has served more than 100 tableware factories home and abroad, and will continue to cooperate with them. If you have a new product design, or you want to improve your production, you can contact us.
